This informative and insightful talk discusses innovative techniques for increasing validity while exploring sensitive material such as suicidal ideation. By participating in this activity, the attendees will be able to: 1) Recognize the following five interviewing techniques for increasing validity: the behavioral incident, shame attenuation, gentle assumption, symptom amplification and denial of the specific; 2) Discuss the theory behind the use of these five techniques for uncovering valid information when exploring sensitive areas such as domestic violence, substance abuse histories and antisocial behavior; and 3) Describe and flexibly weave the above five validity techniques into effective methods of uncovering sensitive material while maintaining a powerful engagement. 36-5 Andropause: What Every Man Should Know NP disorder and its role in clinical anxiety, but there is a paucity of appropriate assessment instruments available. By participating in this activity, the attendees will be able to: 1) Discuss a comprehensive overview of depersonalization symptoms; 2) Discuss differential diagnosis, the relationship between depersonalization and trauma, and a sample patient interview; and 3) Identify the guidelines for the systematic assessment of depersonalization disorder. It is not uncommon for the physicians to encounter male patients in their 50s or older who report fatigue, depression and erectile dysfunction, which may be due to decline in androgen levels. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Identify the confounding factors that can confuse diagnosis of andropause; 2) Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms of andropause and become familiar with the physiologic factors involved in androgen decline in older men; and 3) Discuss new approaches and tools in diagnosing and treating andropause. 11:00 a.m.-1:15 p.m. 43-1 The Delicate Art of Eliciting Suicidal Ideation and Other Sensitive Material: Part 2 PT HOT! Part 2 of this 2-part course is titled An Innovative Method for Eliciting Suicidal Ideation–the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events. This informative and insightful talk discusses the practical application of the interview strategies for eliciting suicidal ideation and behavior in different psychiatric settings. By participating in this activity, the attendees will be able to: 1) Recognize the role of 4 specific interviewing techniques for improving the validity of elicited suicidal ideation while decreasing errors of omission and optimizing engagement; 2) Define the theory and practical application of a specific interview strategy for the elicitation of suicidal ideation and behaviors: the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE approach); and 3) Discuss and flexibly utilize the above approach as a sensitive and rapid method of uncovering suicidal ideation and intent in a busy clinic or hospital setting. 36-6 Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Symptoms, Causes and Treatment PD PT HOT! 42-2 This lecture will identify the known causes of gAD, the cardinal symptoms involved with it and current treatment strategies. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Identify the common symptoms associated with gAD; 2) Discuss the current theory and causality of this disease entity; 3) Examine the most current treatment modalities to treat this disease. PD RX HOT! Nurturing the Pregnant Brain: Preventing Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders 7:15-9:15 p.m. 37-0 Major Depressive Disorder Sunday, Nov. 2 7:00-9:00 a.m. 41-0 Fibromyalgia 8:00-9:15 a.m. 41-1 Futuristic Look at Treatments for Schizophrenia and Alzheimer's PD RX HOT! This course will highlight the latest discoveries in the treatment of Alzheimer disease and schizophrenia and using drug, cellular and gene therapies. It will also look at where future research may be headed. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Discover the results of the latest clinical trials for novel treatments for AD and schizophrenia; 2) Discuss possible drug, cellular and gene targets for future treatments; and 3) Discuss the mechanisms of actions of those targets. Pregnancy and the postpartum period can affect the onset, exacerbation, course, prognosis and consequences of psychiatric disorders. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Discuss peripartum depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia and eating disorders; )2) Recognize symptoms of these disorders in postpartem women; and 3) Discuss tailoring psychotherapeutic interventions for peripartum presentations of these disorders. 43-2 Neuropathic Pain NP 42-3 Headache NP The course discusses the update in the diagnosis and management of both primary and secondary headache disorders. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Differentiate primary headache disorder from headache symptomatic of other disease; 2) Identify both episodic and chronic primary headache disorders; and 3) Discuss the treatment plans for both primary and secondary headache disorders. Neuropathic pain afflicts an estimated 4 million people in the United States. It is a chronic disorder associated with much personal suffering, compromised quality of life and loss of function. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Identify the types and prevalence of neuropathic pain; 2) Discuss the diagnosis of neuropathic pain and why this condition can be misdiagnosed; and 3) Identify optimal therapeutic pathways, and the benefits and risks associated with current treatments. 43-3 Treating Depersonalization Disorder PM PT 42-4 Hormonal Harmony and the Allure of Immortality: The Male and Female Perspectives 41-2 Psychopharmacology During Pregnancy and Postpartum PD HOT! Untreated psychiatric symptoms during pregnancy and postpartum can pose substantial risks for women and their babies. weighing these risks against the risks of psychotropic medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding can be a daunting task. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Summarize the known risks of psychotropic medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding, including antidepressant, mood stabilizing, antipsychotic and anxiolytic agents; 2) Describe prescribing practices that can minimize risks, including dosing strategies at different stages of pregnancy and postpartum; and 3) Discuss the risks and benefits with the mother and her family. This course will examine the physiologic and psychological elements inherent in the aging process as well as current research and useful therapies applicable to clinical practice. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Define the physiologic, hormonal and emotional components of aging in men and women; 2) Identify potential "anti-aging" therapies, the latest anti-aging research, and how to differentiate the "hype" from the science; and 3) Incorporate medically and psychologically proven strategies into clinical practice to enhance the quality of life and promote longevity in an aging population. Although there is as yet no recognized treatment for depersonalization disorder, various combination treatments have shown promise. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Identify the guidelines for the systematic assessment of depersonalization disorder; 2) Recognize combination drug treatments, together with psychological approaches and cognitive-behavioral conceptualization; and 3) Discuss the recent clinical trials on the effectiveness of pharmacological treatment for depersonalization disorder. 43-4 Anxiety in the Elderly GP PD 42-5 Self-Injury: Understanding and Working With Teens and Young Adults Who Cut or Burn Themselves CA PT Anxiety is one of the most prevalent psychiatric problems among the elderly, affecting more older adults than depression or severe cognitive impairment. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Identify the risks of nontreatment of anxiety in the elderly; 2) List signs and symptoms and discuss the differential diagnosis of anxiety in the elderly; and 3) Discuss the pharmacokinetics of frequently used antianxiety medications and their side affects in the elderly. 41-3 Antipsychotics and the Elderly GP RX Although atypical antipsychotics are indicated for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder only, they are used widely in the elderly to treat a variety of conditions—from dementia-related agitation and psychosis, to severe anxiety and PTSD, to treatmentresistant depression. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Identify possible side effects and the potential liability that can arise from using these medications in dementia patients; 2) Discuss recent data that shed light on the actual significance of cerebrovascular adverse effects and increased mortality in dementia patients; and 3) Describe situations where use of atypical antipsychotics is contraindicated. Increasing numbers of teenagers are self-injuring (cutting, carving, scratching, burning, head banging) to feel better. Treatment providers and family members can inadvertently escalate self-injurious behavior if not shown effective ways to support these individuals.
