A large white cross, perched high above downtown Ventura and illuminated at night, marks Grant Park, a favorite picnic spot with panoramic views of the city and the Channel Islands. The expansive recreational area in the foothills above Poli Street also includes walking trails and is accessible from several points including Ferro Drive, Brakey Road, and Summit Drive. Bed & Breakfast Inns Bella Maggiore Inn, a historic landmark at 67 S. California St., (652-0277) is a European style B&B with a northern Italian theme and a lovely garden courtyard with a restaurant and wine bar. Shopping An array of clothing boutiques, home and garden shops, art galleries, gift stores and other specialty shops enliven the downtown area. Most shops are on or near Main Street, within walking distance of one another. Satiate the senses at an artisan’s chocolate shop, spark new curiosities in a rare books emporium, or find timeless design in the many new and vintage home furnishings stores. A favorite is Rosie Lee Imports (673 E. Main St., 643-3624), a British grocery with specialty foods, sweets and teas, fine china and gift baskets. At B on Main (309 E. Main St., 643-9309), find specialty gifts from jewelry and glasses to cards and pajamas. Bank of Books (748 E.
