Dr. Dobb's Journal - January 2008 - (Page 40) WELCOME T wenty-one years ago in a Bay Area hotel, 600 programmers gathered to argue and debate the state of software development. If you were at that first SD West, you were probably considered a hacker at best—despite the revolution you were helping to engineer. Corporate America may not have known you existed, but software development was changing the world. From PCs and laptops to the Internet, to databases and the proliferation of mobile devices, software is now essential to our daily lives. Since the early days, Software Development Conference & Expo and Dr. Dobb’s have been chronicling the tools, languages and concepts that drive the radical changes software has brought to the world. This spring we invite you to join the revolution at SD West 2008. The software development industry changes rapidly. From platforms to languages to the concepts behind modern software development, SD West has been on the cutting edge of software development since the beginning and this year’s comprehensive program is one our best yet. As the largest independent conference for software developers, we pride ourselves on being platform and vendor neutral, offering courses across the entire software development lifecycle. More than 80% of this year’s 240 plus sessions are brand new or completely updated— including the 4th installment of Stroustrup & Sutter on C++. Bjarne Stroustrup and Herb Sutter have put together an entirely new line up of courses for their in-depth, two-day tutorial on one of software development’s most influential and widely used languages. Even if you’ve attended in past years, you won’t want to miss this year’s event as Bjarne and Herb will offer insights into the latest evolution of C++ having just left the most recent standards meeting. Also new this year is the continued evolution of our .NET track with a full five days of courses covering the newest release of .NET 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008. We’ve also added a new track, IT for the Developer—focusing on topics developers need for getting the software they’ve built to run—and expanded and deepened our courses in software process and methods, Java, Web development, service-oriented architecture and much more. With 13 tracks and five full days of tutorials and conference sessions, SD West offers everything you need to join the revolution. The following 14 pages detail only a small portion of what is happening at SD West 2008. I hope you’ll take some time to peruse this selection of courses and check out the complete program at sdexpo.com. I hope to see you in Santa Clara.
