Embedded Systems Design Conference 2008 - (Page 2) wElCoME lEttEr embedded systems Conference silicon valley weLCome LeTTer 20 years of Embedded Systems Conferences. That’s a long time in this industry. While there have certainly been peaks and valleys along the way, there’s no doubt that the embedded community is seeing some unparalleled triumphs. And the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) is helping to lead the way. You may think it’s tough to top last year’s events, with the likes of Al Gore’s Keynote Address and the now-famous Toyota Prius Tear Down. But I’m here to say that the ESC team has done just that—we’ve pulled together a program that is second to none. Topping that list is something you’re not likely to see at other conferences: Attendees who have registered for the All-Access Pass will receive a fully loaded embedded development kit when they walk through the door, one that’s theirs to keep. To that end, we’ll be hosting a series of classes that will help you customize your kit specifically for your application. The classes include adding USB support; security/encryption, wireless connectivity; BIOS tricks; adding a Web server; and much more. Next, we’ve got a Software Design track where we present a series of classes that provide practical, immediately-useful suggestions to help you get working code completed on time. Application areas covered here include communications, multimedia, military and aerospace. Are you designing with a real-time operating system (RTOS)? Maybe, but do you really understand what’s going on inside the RTOS? We’ve got the industry’s experts from all over the world on hand to teach you how to select a scheduler; timeoptimize your C++ code; profile and reduce CPU loading; and so on. If your issues lie on the hardware side of the wall (does that engineering wall still exist in your company?), you need to be designing with the software team in mind. And vice versa if you’re on the other side. Hence, the topics in the Hardware Design track cover how to lay out a board or system; how to choose a processor, DSP, or microcontroller; what memory architectures are available and what tradeoffs are associated with each; and when and how to implement programmable logic in your hardware. And don’t forget to check out my favorite feature, the Tear Downs. We’ve got a host of these planned, including the tear down of a Gibson Robot guitar. The musical instrument automatically tunes to a range of standard and alternative tunings at the touch of a button. A second product we’ll delve into is the Sony OLED television. While still a diminutive cousin compared to today’s large LCD and Plasma flat panels, this TV breaks new ground in technology, panel thinness, and contrast ratio. That just scratches the surface of all the exciting events. I hope you’ll join us in San Jose.
