Embedded Systems Design Europe - February 2008 - (Page 10) news MindTree - ADI Trango embeds virtualization tool in Cavium’s multicore CPUs develop security As part of a partnership with Cavium Networks Inc. (Mountain View, Calif.), Trango Virtual Processors, a French provider of embedded processor virtualization IP, announced it has enhanced its Hypervisor embedded virtualization technology for Cavium’s Octeon multicore MIPS64 processor family. Trango (Grenoble, France) claims its Hypervisor technology will provide Octeon processor customers “with high-availability, application reliability, user-data security, adaptive resource allocation, IO virtualization and power reduction” by creating on-demand Virtual Processors according to the dynamically changing workload of highthroughput intelligent communication, storage and security applications. “There is a single hypervisor per core with an interprocessor communication stack,” said Frank Altschuler, Trango’s marketing director. “Thread management and process migration is handled through the hypervisor. Typically, you would have an executive whose task would consist in migrating processing tasks to the appropriate core. The supervisory task operates on a number of levels, including power management, fault tolerance, redundancy, maintenance attributes, as well as speed on unused cores. It is a very flexible mechanism.” In order to support aggressive power management, Trango said Virtual Processors can be migrated from core to core. The processing load is then spread across the available cores proportionally to the load with extra cores shut down in states as Virtual Processors are offloaded. “Here the focus is on power management because it is the biggest advantage we bring to multicore,” Altshuler added. “It makes the layout much simpler. In a multicore design, you often have to do the relocation. Everything is statically locked in. That paradigm goes out of the window when using our solution because you can change the allocation dynamically on the fly.” TRANGO expects that its Hypervisor product with a complete Eclipsebased tools suite, and customized engineering and consulting services for Cavium Networks’ Octeon multicore MIPS64 processor family will be available for shipment to customers in the first quarter of 2008. DVR platform A licensable digital video recorder (DVR) platform designed specifically for the surveillance market has been developed by MindTree Consulting and Analog Devices. The DVR product platform is based on Analog Devices Blackfin processor and the system is expandable up to 16 cameras with simultaneous recording, streaming and playback. The platform provides processing to accommodate complex algorithms for compression, motion detection, object tracking and analytics. Driven by the dual core Blackfin AD-BF561 processor, the platform supports multi-format audio, video, voice and image processing; multi-mode baseband and packet processing; control processing; and real-time security. The hardware architecture can accommodate customized hardware, an enhanced front panel user interface, additional processors through external bus interface unit expansion slots, ports and interfaces. It provides MPEG-4 video and G.711 audio encoding with H.264 in development. Images can be archived al through USB 2.0 and SD card interfaces. NXP extends deal with ARM to cover MCUs NXP has expanded its licensing deal with processor intellectual property licensor ARM to include the ARM Cortex-M3 processor core for microcontrollers. (MCUs) NXP is set to introduce a family of microcontrollers based on the ARM Cortex-M3 processor in 2008. As part of the agreement, NXP will also have access to all ARM Cortex family processors, including the recently announced Cortex-A9 MPCore multicore processor; the ARM Mali family of graphics processing units; CoreSight 10 on-chip debug and trace technology; and a full suite of ARM physical IP for the development of ICs with minimized power consumption. ARM said NXP plans to release several series of microcontrollers based on the ARM Cortex-M3 processor. These microcontrollers will be aimed at applications in consumer, industrial, medical and automotive systems, with a memory accelerator module featuring embedded flash memory. The NXP microcontrollers based on the Cortex-M3 processor core ex- pected to be pin-compatible with, and offered in addition to, its ARM7- and ARM9-based microcontrollers. The strategic agreement between NXP and ARM underscores a shared vision of how 32-bit processors are fundamentally changing advanced digital products from mobile phones, portable media players, TVs and set-top boxes, to identification applications, cars and a wide range of other electronic devices, said Rene Penning de Vries, senior vice president and chief technology officer at NXP.
