Embedded Systems Design Europe - February 2008 - (Page 41) embedded world Scalable ETX platform with SATA and PCI/ISA The MSC Vertriebs ETX family ETEPM8553/ CM8553/ CM8523 has six members and complies with the latest ETX Specification 3.02, which includes an integrated dual SATA mass storage interface on the module. The processor performance of the ETX family is scalable through different assemblies using Intel Pentium M or Celeron M embedded processors. The types named ETE-PM8553 are available with Intel Pentium M 745, which is clocked with 1.8 GHz or alternatively with Intel Pentium M (1.6 GHz) or Intel Pentium M LV 738 (1.4 GHz). The maximum capacity of the L2 cache is 2 Mbyte. The CM versions come with Intel Celeron M LV 373 (1.0 GHz) or Intel Celeron M 320 (1.3 GHz). The most energy saving module is equipped with an Intel ULV Celeron M, which draws a typical power of 8 W at a clock frequency of 600 MHz. The 95 x 114 x 12 mm ETX platform is based on the chipsets Intel 855GME or 852GM together with a ICH4 south bridge. The Intel Extreme Graphics2 Controller integrated in the chip set provides good graphics performance. The main memory can be expanded up to 1 Gbyte by means of DDR333 SDRAM via a SODIMM socket. ECC memory is also supported. A range of connection options offers flexibility. In addition to a 32-bit PCI bus interface, an improved ISA Bridge (PCI/ISA Bridge ITE8888) is available on the modules. Moreover, in addition to a LAN and a sound interface, connections for flat panel or CRT displays are provided. The maximum resolution of the CRT interface is 2048 x 1536 pixels, the LCD interface delivers up to 1600 x 1200 pixels. Parallel and serial interfaces, IrDA, 4 x USB 2.0, as well as signal lines for keyboard and mouse complete the offer. Storage media can be connected via two SATA-150 and two enhanced IDE ports. Also available is the modular COM Express CXE-DX7520 family and two new modules are available with either Intel Core 2 Duo Xeon (Merom 667), which runs at 2.16 GHz, or in a energy saving, low-voltage LV version with a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz. The processor, equipped with 4 Mbyte of L2 cache, supports Intel’s VT virtualization technology and thanks to EM64T (Intel 64) can execute 32-bit and 64-bit wide instructions. The main memory can be expanded up to a maximum capacity of 4 Gbyte by the insertion of DDR2 400 RAMs in the two existing DIMM sockets. The COM Express interface, implemented as type 2, provides two x8 PCI Express, one x4 PCIe, one x1 PCIe and PCI. In addition, two SATA, an IDE and four USB 2.0 ports as well as an Ethernet and a VGA port are available.
