Education is a key to improving designs I t’s that time of the year when we hope that the travel and hotel arrangements work out and that a cold snap wont take a hold on central Europe – yes its that annual pilgrimage to Nürmberg, more commonly know as the Embedded World conference and exhibition. Several months before the show opens the organizers were already boasting that the exhibition space booked was already outstripping last year’s event and there were 20 percent new national and international exhibitors. And Embedded World is following an international trend which sees the conference becoming an increasingly important part of the event. This has long been the case in the U.S. where the Embedded Systems Conferences (ESC) in San Jose (April) and Boston (October) have long been tutorial and technical conference led events. The upcoming Silicon Valley event will include over 200 shorter sessions alongside one and two day tutorials as well as hand-on courses at which you can build your own embedded system. Not forgetting the product teardowns which this year will include a Sony OLED 11inch TV and the Gibson Robot Guitar. The ESC formula has also been successfully exported to India where last October over 1500 electronics technology industry professionals attended the inaugural event in Bangalore. The organizers have already announced that the event this year will have not only have Intel as a platinum sponsor but has been expanded to include three regional events in Hyderabad, Prune and Noida in September and October. But back to Bavaria where one highlight should be the first public presentation in Europe by the ‘father of MONOS flash’, Kiyoshi Matsubara of Renesas Technology. The MONOS (metal-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon) high-speed embedded flash technology provides 10ns read access time in the 90nm process generation. This year’s keynote speaker will be Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bharat Balasubramanian, director group research & advance development E/E, IT and processes at Daimler AG, who will not unnaturally explore embedded systems in the automotive industry. There is also an executive summit at which during one morning, participants will have the opportunity of getting a full overview on the future trends of the embedded business. David Kleidermacher, CTO of Green Hills Software, Jochen Hanebeck, senior vice president and general manager microcontrollers at Infineon and Ulrich Gehrmann, chairman of Kontron, will represent three topic areas: hardware, software and tools. Last year the organizers added an electronic displays conference and its success has seen a repeat with over 50 papers in parallel sessions for the first time planned for this year’s event.
