Embedded Systems Design Europe - May 2008 - (Page 40) new products Coverity tools analyzes threads in Java for defects Coverity Thread Analyzer for Java is a dynamic analysis tool for multithreaded applications that automatically detects concurrency defects that can cause data corruption and application failures. It can be used with Coverity Prevent to help developers control the complexity of writing multi-threaded applications. Coverity Thread Analyzer for Java observes code as it is executed and automatically and predictably identifies race conditions and deadlocks. The product is unique in the field of dynamic analysis because it detects not only problems that will occur in limited testing environments, but also problems that have the potential to occur over extended operations in field environments. This distinction is particularly important for multi-threaded applications that, due to their complexity, may run without failure for extremely long periods of time before a ‘perfect storm’ of system events triggers a concurrency defect. Coverity Thread Analyzer can reduce the risk inherent in migrating complex, single-threaded code bases to perform effectively in multi-core environments. The product accomplishes this by reporting thread-shared data to users, indicating locations where a locking discipline should be introduced. This allows developers to proactively identify existing and potential concurrency issues, so they can eliminate them before they cause failures in the field. Coverity Thread Analyzer and Coverity Prevent provide an analysis solution with capabilities to identify and eliminate concurrency and other critical code defects that can cause slowdowns, failures and crashes. These two Coverity products integrate static and dynamic analysis in a unique, complimentary manner by adopting the strengths of each technique to enhance the other. Specifically, the combined solution accelerates and lowers the overhead associated with dynamic analysis while further improving the accuracy of static analysis through the elimination of false positive results. Unlike other dynamic analysis products that impose a memory and/ or runtime overhead between 10x and 100x on the software systems they analyze, Coverity Thread Analyzer has a 2x overhead for most programs, enabling the tool to be used in select production environments that include interactive applications and applications with strict timing requirements. Coverity Thread Analyzer is a standalone product that runs on the following platforms: Linux (32-bit & 64-bit), Solaris Sparc, Solaris X86, Windows XP and Server 2003, Mac OS X. The product supports Sun JDK 1.5, IBM’s 1.5 JVM and BEA Jrockit 5. www.coverity.com XC800-based designs get fast and secure production Hitex Development Tools has launched a special programming solution addressing users who will start the production of their XC800-based products. The XC800 family is the new line of 8-bit microcontrollers from Infineon, combining a high performance 8051 core with on-chip Flash and ROM memory as well as a powerful mix of peripherals such as an enhanced CAN, LIN and 10-bit analog to digital converter. The XC800-ProdPro is a production programmer supporting all XC800 derivatives. The XC800-ProdPro package includes a XC800 Flash Target Probe that allows storing the application program image file into the device. It then can be set up to be used in two ways, either for standalone operation, i.e. it automatically starts programming the stored image when it is connected to the target. The other way is to use the included DLL to control the device via a PC or production line computer. The DLL offers start, stop, verify, erase and setup (load image file and settings) functions. To build a production environment with up to 8 units for parallel programming, additional XC800 Flash Target Probes can be added to the XC800-ProdPro. www.hitex.com 40 MAY 2008 | embedded systems design europe | www.embedded.com/europe http://www.coverity.com http://www.hitex.com http://www.embedded.com/europe
