Embedded developers didn’t even realize they were embedded developers. While we still struggle with the definition of an embedded system, our history of embedded video attempts to nail down a definition. It also shows the origins of embedded, detailing the history of a ubiquitous technology. The History of Embedded Systems runs for just under 10 minutes. It was originally created to serve as part of the keynote presentation at the recent Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, Calif. While it certainly doesn’t include every milestone that makes the embedded industry what it is today, it does a great job of explaining what ‘embedded technology’ is and how it got you where it is today. And that’s a really good thing, because as you may know, explaining what embedded technology is to someone outside our industry is a somewhat difficult thing to do. I often say that if you ask five different people what an embedded system is, you’ll get five different answers, even from people within our space. There are a growing number of other videos on the service including interviews with Bjarne Stroustrup, the inventor/creator of the C++ language; and Paul Saffo, a technology forecaster from Stanford University. A great feature of our player is that it lets us upload your videos as well. So if you have something that’s educa- E tional or entertaining and is applicable to embedded systems developers, send me a note. We’ll figure out how to get your video posted. Colin Holland is editor of Embedded Systems Design Europe. He can be contacted at chollandse18@mac.com. magazine, TechInsights, has just acquired the Embedded Systems Show (ESS), the U.K.’s largest forum for the embedded system design community as well as its companion print property, Embedded System Engineering. The Embedded Systems Show is held annually, the next show being held at the Birmingham NEC on October 1-2, 2008. The European market remains a vibrant one for design, particularly in the embedded space, and ESS offers us an excellent opportunity to expand our presence and provide our customers additional venues for engaging with their audience. In addition to the show and magazine, TechInsights also acquired MCAD, the U.K.’s leading journal for decision makers in the CAD/CAM/CAE application spaces and a second event, the Auto ID & Data Capture (AIDC) event for OEMs and end-users of RFID, NFC, and wireless sensor networks. Both businesses dovetail with existing TechInsights products, AIDC with the RFID event and MCAD with the Mechatropolis online environment. These products will provide TechInsights with an established position in the mechanical engineering space, positioning it to take advantage of the accelerating convergence of electronic design with the automotive, industrial and consumer electronics industries. 5 www.embedded.com | embedded systems design europe | JUNE – JULY 2008 http://cmptv.net/TeardownTV/embedded_launcher.php http://www.embededd.com http://cmptv.net/TeardownTV/embedded_launcher.php http://cmptv.net/TeardownTV/embedded_launcher.php http://www.embedded.com/europe http://www.embedded.com
