Embedded Systems Design Europe - August/September 2008 - (Page 42) new products Kit eases use of ADI devices for touch control Touch controls are migrating from consumer to professional electronics as a simple, reliable user interface. Abacus has a board that allows any PC to be used to evaluate and design a flexible touch control interface. Popularised by Apple’s iPOD and other consumer electronics applications, touch controls are increasingly attracting interest amongst designers of professional and industrial instruments for use in the human-machine interface (HMI). Touch controls have no moving parts and are by definition fully sealed, making them extremely reliable, and also highly compact, making them easy to integrate into an attractive front panel design. The evaluation board from Abacus is based on the Analog Devices AD7147 CapTouch controller, and allows designers to develop responsive touch controls including scroll wheels, sliders, touch pads and/or up to 36 individual touch sensitive buttons. Utilizing capacitance-to-digital conversion, the AD7147 is suitable for portable applications, and can be implemented in an ultra thin form factor. Features include The EVAL-AD7147 from Abacus allows users to evaluate all the features of both the AD7147 and the IIC equipped AD7147-I. Downloadable software allows designers to test the capacitance sensors, and experiment with different register settings to obtain the optimum performance in their system environment. The self-contained evaluation system has its own microcontroller and on-board sensors, but also can be interfaced to prototype sensor boards for sensor evaluation and comparison. It is powered via the USB interface to the host PC. The AD7147 has an SPI-compatible serial interface, and the AD7147-1 has an I2C-compatible serial interface. Both parts have an interrupt output, as well as a GPIO. There is a VDRIVE pin to set the voltage level for the serial interface independent of VCC. www.abacus.co.uk/ad7147 active shield technology to protect against noise, and on-chip sensitivity algorithms, to ensure reliable, accurate touch response under variable environmental conditions, including changes in humidity, temperature and differing user characteristics. Demo kit supports design-in of flash microcontrollers NEC Electronics Europe has released the V850ES/Jx3-L all flash demonstration kit to support the recently launched microcontroller family. The V850ES/Jx3-L kit is an extension of NEC Electronics’ flash product line targeted for low power applications, which supports on-board debugging, flash programming and real time execution of application programs. The board contains hardware elements to easily demonstrate simple I/O-functions such as timer input/ output, push buttons, 7-segment LED, ADC reference voltage, UART and other serial interfaces as well as a connection to external user’s hardware for custom tests. A number of demonstration projects are included in the kit. These will help developers to evaluate the microcontroller and the board. The flexibility of the V850ES/Jx3-L 42 All Flash demonstration kit combined with a number of demonstration projects included in the kit enable developers to rapidly evaluate the V850ES/ JG3-L microcontroller and experiment with its peripher- als as well as hastily prototype a design. NEC Electronics has achieved 32bit performance with 16-bit power consumption in the recently launched 32-bit V850ES/Jx3-L microcontroller. The power consumption of the chip is 50% lower than in the existing micro- controllers from NEC Electronics. The MCU benefits from a 5-20MHz high performance 32-bit V850 core with the support of a hardware multiplier to efficiently perform arithmetic functions and quickly process large amounts of data. It includes a number of flexible serial channels for different types of serial communications, an external bus interface to support mega bytes of extra memory in addition to up to 256kbyte of flash and 16kbytes of RAM. In addition it offers a number of independent DMA channels and an abundance of different timers on chip. The analog support on the MCU offers 12 channels of 10-bit A/D conversion and two channel 8-bit DACs.
