Linux aims to keep up pressure L inux certainly seems to be a flavor of this month, as it has been in a number of times before. As we report on page 6, a recent survey by market research group Venture Development Corporation (VDC) sees Embedded system manufacturers are increasingly committing to Linux as the operating system of choice. While Linux has found its way into a number of embedded sectors, one of the key opportunities for the open source operating systems over the next several years according to VDC will be in the mobile phone market, where it is quickly becoming a leading application operating system, and manufacturers and telecom operators are rallying to drive more comprehensive, industry-specific Linux-based standards. “At the root of most of the challenges faced by commercial suppliers is the question of how to bring significant additional value to an operating system that is freely available, continually improving, increasingly supported by embedded system/component suppliers, and in demand from companies interested in decreasing their overall development costs and/or bill of materials,” says VDC. And the encouraging vibes from the Linux community are reinforced by that fact that MontaVista CEO, Tom Kelly has been scouring Europe for acquisitions to boost its presence here – see page 9. One of the biggest industry moves in recent weeks has been Emerson’s plan to buy the Motorola’s Communications Computing group – see page 8. With this deal, Emerson is betting big that a new set of standards in the embedded and high-availability computing markets – ATCA, MicroTCA and AMC, collectively known as xTCA – will grow rapidly and profitably. As a recent article in our sister publication EE Times Europe detailed (see www.eetimes.eu/202400805), the total AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA merchant market should improve from $292.7 million in 2006 to $978.7 million in 2008 and to $3,679 million in 2011. So it is a market worth going after. As VDC says, “Combined, Artesyn and MECC bring Emerson Network Power to an irrefutable position of prominence in the embedded computing business overall, and specifically in the emerging market for xTCA solutions. While a big deal in its own right, this is just the latest in a number of consolidations in the merchant embedded board market with the most recent the Radisys acquisition of Intel’s PCI and Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture board business. Are there more acquisitions or mergers to come or is the supply of possible targets at its end? Just when you think that the market is stabilizing another deal comes along.
