Mobile World Congress is rapidly approaching in Barcelona on the 11th till 14th February 2008. Even though this exhibition leans heavily towards the services side, their are many manufacturers of equipment and components that come over all over the world to present their latest innovations. One key theme that will be of particular interest will be WiMAX. There is a lot of noise surrounding this emerging technology as well as emerging competition in the form of LTE (Long Term Evolution). WiMAX is the scruffy upstart that threatens to steal the show and cash from the incumbent mobile companies. It is looking to deliver broadband wireless everywhere and is not fussy about business models as long as they work. Mobile phone operators on the other hand are looking to protect their positions and investments in 3G technology, which they are continuously enhancing. However, at one point the legacy needs to go and hence LTE, which in essence is the same technology as WiMAX, just a different set of standards and vested interests. Hopefully, after Barcelona we will see what progress WiMAX has made and if LTE is managing to close the gap. Will the WiMAX lead narrow. Who will win depends a lot on WiMAX deploying rapidly.
