Microwave Engineering Europe - June 2008 - (Page 17) ANTENNA DESIGN 17 than undertaking multiple board turns and tweaking by traditional cut-and-try methods. The method-of-moments (MOM) simulation technique used in the planar 3-D EM simulator assumes an infinite dielectric plane, which is acceptable in most applications where this condition is approximated. In situations where the finite dielectric effects must be considered, for example, when the dipole is printed very close to the edge of the PCB, a full 3D-EM simulation using the finite element method (FEM) can be employed. Figure 5 shows the simulation using Agilent’s Electromagnetic Design System (EMDS). Re-positioning the dipole from 5 mm to 2 mm from the PCB edge causes an upward shift in resonant frequency by almost 100 MHz. The dipole far-field radiation patterns predicted by both simulations are compared in Figure 6. Since EMDS does not require the assumption of infinite PCB dielectric in its computation, the far-field plot is more Figure 5: Full 3D EM simulation reveals the effect of printing the dipole close to the edge of the PCB. The resonance frequency shifts upward by 100 MHz by moving the dipole from 5 mm to 2 mm from PCB edge. Figure 6: The far-field pattern of the dipole computed from method-of-moments (MOM) technique shows no radiation in the plane of the PCB because of the infinite-dielectric assumption inherent in MOM computation. More accurate finite-element-method (FEM) computation of the far field is on the right with a more even toroidal distribution of radiated power as indicated by the color shading.
