NFC or Near Field Communications has been a potential solution to providing consumers with an electronic wallet for some time now. However, it has been dogged by issues in security, software complexity and vested interests between hardware and service providers. However, at the recent European NFC Developers Congress that recently took place in Monte Carlo, delegates were positive that things were moving forward and that these issues would be resolved. However, for several years conflicts of interest have kept the technology in the cooler. It remains to be seen whether the greatest impediment to NFC, namely the disagreements between the mobile phone operators, the banking and payment processing community and the SIM card makers will be resolved soon. At stake, is control of of the payment process and at least two powerful stake holders, the banks and mobile phone operators, are at loggerheads over who will be in charge. The enthusiasm at the conference comes on the back of solid progress in standardization and field trials. Hopefully, this is a sign that NFC will move forward and give consumers a useful tool to use on their phones. In any event, NFC promises to be an enabling technology in less developed areas as it could enable the practical use of micro-money, especially as most mobile phones are now sold in emerging markets. On a separate note, MTT-S in Atlanta is upon us once again. MWEE will have a stand and presence at the show as usual and you are welcome to pay us a visit.
