On September 11, 2008, radio manufacturers, industry experts, and venture capitalists will assemble in Boston to explore requirements and anticipated trends in radio technology development over the next 5 years (www. sdrforum.org/Boston08meeting). It appears that as radio complexity is driven by new standards and services such as WiMAX, LTE, 700-MHz and so on, one solution to making this happen costeffectively and without unnecessary complexity is the successful use of Software Defined Radio. The key here is making it work without incurring power penalties. Some companies are positive that the significant technological hurdles can be overcome. For example, IMEC is a research organization active in developing such technology for commercialization. Their flexible-air-interface (FLAI) baseband platform for software-defined radios (SDR) is now ready to support the next generation of high data rate mobile devices featuring, among others 802.11n, 802.16e, and mobile TV. It also features forward compatibility with the upcoming 3GPP-LTE communication standard. The system-on-chip (SoC) platform and its patented components with their programming environment will be licensed to industry for commercial product development as white-box intellectual property. Working silicon of a 100 Mbps SDR baseband chip has recently been demonstrated. In another example, Lime Microsystems, see article on Page 14, have developed a transceiver that can be digitally configured to operate between 375 MHZ and 4 GHz with user-selectable bandwidths. This is a first step in enabling WiMAX, 3G or LTE products with a programmable device that relies on a CMOS process, thus ensuring costs are contained. Maybe we won’t need so many power amplifiers in the end?
