Microwave Engineering Europe - September 2008 - (Page 14) 14 COVER FEATURE — TESTING LTE/WiMAX Figure 4: Agilent’s 89601A VSA software offers comprehensive WiMAX modulation analysis for evaluating and troubleshooting fixed and mobile WiMAX signals. It can measure the different WiMAX equipment profiles with bandwidths from 1.25 to 28 MHz, at frequencies from baseband to 11 GHz and beyond, and supports advanced WiMAX features such as subchannelization. compliant 802.16d and/or e physical layer (PHY) test tool for fixed and mobile WiMAX Tx and Rx applications. • Network deployment and service assurance — Agilent’s Wireless Network Optimization Platform and Signaling Analyzer WiMAX Solution help engineers successfully install, optimize and troubleshoot WiMAX networks. Conclusion With LTE and Mobile WiMAX, nextgeneration wireless devices will offer more functionality and feature-rich mobile multimedia experiences. They will also get more complex, creating an array of added challenges for the designer. While LTE is gaining momentum and is the stated evolution of the established GSM-UMTS cellular legacy, WiMAX technology has the advantage of a head start in development, testing and deployment. Regardless of which wireless technology ultimately dominates the market, Agilent Technologies will be there with early availability of powerful test and measurement solutions to ensure any challenges are adequately addressed and to help accelerate the delivery of wireless devices based on these emerging standards. “WiMAX,” “Fixed WiMAX,” “Mobile WiMAX,” “WiMAX Forum,” the WiMAX Forum logo, “WiMAX Forum Certified,” and the WiMAX Forum Certified logo are trademarks of the WiMAX Forum. In addition to these offerings, Agilent has partnered with Anite to address the areas of protocol development and UE protocol conformance test. When the RF conformance test specifications for LTE are defined by the 3GPP (towards the end of 2008), Agilent will be ready with standardscompliant system solutions. Mobile WiMAX Agilent today offers the largest breadth of WiMAX design and test solutions spanning the entire lifecycle from R&D, design verification, pre-conformance, conformance, and manufacturing, through network deployment and service assurance — for Fixed and Mobile WiMAX, WiBro, and including support for Wave 2 and MIMO. These comprehensive solutions can be used for: • Research and development — Agilent delivers a complete, integrated R&D design and test environment including simulation, characterization and evaluation tools to aide in early product development (Figure 4). • Design verification and pre-conformance — Agilent offers specialized software, signal generation, spectrum analysis, and design verification test solutions which help engineers validate that their designs conform to the WiMAX standard, as well as the various country regulations, during design verification. • Conformance test — Agilent’s range of WiMAX test products incorporate the latest industry-required measurements and are found in the AT4 Wireless MINT RCT System. Agilent also now offers an IEEE 802.16e 2005 Protocol Conformance Test (PCT) Solution. • Manufacturing — Agilent’s signal-generation and analysis tools verify compliance with still-evolving WiMAX conformance test requirements. The newly introduced Agilent N8300 is a one-box RF parametric test set targeting manufacturing and design engineers who need a standard- About the author Janine (Jan) R Whitacre received her BS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1979. She has over 10 years of experience working on emerging cellular technologies and is currently focused on application engineering for LTE. Frank Palmer is currently the WiMAX marketing program manager for Agilent Technologies. Before taking up his present position he held positions as wireless industry marketing manager and wireless applications engineer where he was responsible for understanding the test needs of the wireless communications industry. Frank holds a B.S. degree in Electronic Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
