News Comment Cover feature: Uncovering test and measurement’s role in advancing LTE and Mobile WiMAX Regardless of any future outcome with respect to WiMAX and LTE, one thing is certain; the availability of test and measurement solutions that parallel standards development is key to driving either standard forward. 16 WiMAX: WiMAX and LTE need to address issues of backhaul, cost and efﬁciency for successful deployment As next generation wireless systems based on standards such as WiMAX and LTE prepare to roll out, the strain on the network due to high data rates and subscriber demand will require new thinking. Backhaul capability, size, cost and efﬁciency are major challenges to commercial ‘4G’. Four advances in WiMAX/LTE are presented. WiMAX: Manufacturing communications technology products in India WiMAX is one of the fastest growing wireless broadband technologies, and India is the world’s fastest growing wireless telecommunication’s market. This combination results in a fertile market for volume manufacturing of communications technology products in India. Test and Measurement: Analyzing RF ampliﬁer complex modulation performance In wireless communication devices, phase and amplitude distortion created by the power ampliﬁer directly affects the quality of the communication. The most signiﬁcant measurement for analyzing power ampliﬁer performance in the latest communication system protocols is the measurement of error vector magnitude, or EVM. Mobile platforms evolve to meet future demands The driving factors of cost reduction and accelerating time-to-market, coupled with the need to employ well-proven technology, has led to the widespread adoption of a platform approach to electronic system design of all types of consumer electronic products, including mobile handsets. This article analyses how far this approach can and should be applied.
