The challenges of ensuring coverage is adequate indoors and outdoors in urban canyons is not a trivial problem and requires new network topologies that use clusters or underlay networks. This requires not only a lot more basestations, albeit smaller micro-, pico- and femtobasestations, but a lot more backhaul capability. This in turn raises costs. It would appear that the key here is to get backhaul costs and equipment costs down significantly — probably an order of magnitude will be needed. One way of doing this is using silicon, integrating everything on to the chip. For example, DesignArt, a fabless startup based in Israel is doing just this with a WiMAX basestation SoC. As silicon become available costs should drop dramatically and the commercial viability of ‘4G’ should be assured. What about LTE, which in terms of development lags WiMAX? Essentially the technology here is the same, however the business model of LTE will most likely focus towards cellular networks. In one sense, WiMAX could end up solving the technical and cost challenges facing ‘4G’, only for LTE to come along and deploy, backed by cash-rich mobile operators. LTE will benefit from the existing cellular infrastructure in the sense that operators will have a ‘3G’ base of customers to migrate over to’4G’. This is already happening with data rate capability boosts to existing ‘3G’ networks. Whatever happens, it will be the market and business models that will decide, not the technology pertaining to WiMAX and LTE. In any event, it is unlikely, that the customer will pay more for ‘4G’.
