The increasing attraction of the 60 GHz unlicensed band for wireless communications combined with CMOS scaling yielding faster devices presents an opportunity for using mainstream CMOS technology for 60-GHz radios. For example, Scientists at the Georgia Electronic Design Center in the U.S, are working on ways to use high radio frequencies, up to 60GHz, to transfer very large data files over short distances. This is not in competition to current wireless technologies but rather a complement to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth based on the unlicensed 2 to 2.5 GHz band. However, it is a threat to emerging Ultra Wideband (UWB) and wireless USB. The research team have achieved data transmission rates of 15 Gbit/s, which in practical terms is a DVD-quality movie in under five seconds. Now that would be beneficial to consumers. The team is however fully aware that cost is key and are looking at $5 as a ball park price for single chip implementation. A few prototypes have also been produced. Competition comes in the form of SiBeam Inc., which has revealed some details of its 60GHz technology. The company is working in conjunction with its partners in the WirelessHD consortium. Other members of the WirelessHD consortium, launched late last year, include LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic), NEC Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., SiBeam Inc., Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. Whether 60 GHz makes the grade in terms of performance differential, cost and safety to threaten or leap-frog UWB remains to be seen. These are still very early days, and UWB already promises a significant performance leap with respect to what is currently available.
