At risk here for a multitude of reasons is the limited supply of oil and predictions that supply is to tighten more — unless there is an economic downturn, which will only postpone the inevitable. Tackling this problem is not trivial, nor is the science and engineering behind alternative energy be it wind, geothermal, wave, biogas or solar. However, wireless has a role to play. We are already seeing the beginnings in AMI or automated metering infrastructure. These are basically smart meters that monitor and analyze energy use or water use so that customers and utilities can benefit from dynamic pricing. For example, customers might want to take advantage of off-peak use or buy only 'green' electricity or regulate their costs incurred. Utilities can also regulate and reduce peak demand. However, we can go one step further and build smart appliances that turn themselves off and minimise wastage. In fact, the whole house will be communicating with its individual appliances and the outside world. A first step here is the Smart Energy profile of the ZigBee standard, discussed at length in this issue. Why wireless? Simply, cables are too expensive and inflexible, but also, the typical low data rates, required for all this wireless chatter cannot justify the need for cabling. Wireless is a cheap and powerful alternative. So what about serious energy applications. Well a thermal solar farm, today claimed to be close to the cost of coal, requires the use of thousands of small low-cost mirrors to focus sunlight on a tower. A wireless network here would eliminate a lot of cables, especially if the highly accurate motors driving the mirrors use a solar cell for power. Smart energy is in its infancy, but it is here to stay.
