Microwave Engineering Europe - November 2007 - (Page 13) MICROWAVE COMPONENTS — EDA 13 Microwave component design easier with new EM and EDA tools By Jean-Pierre Joosting ecently, there has been a flurry of activity in the software design tool space with announcements by Applied Wave Research, Agilent Technologies and CST. All offer innovations in the EM tool space. Agilent recently started shipping the Genesys 2007.08 EDA platform, which now includes new statistical and electromagnetic analyses that provide affordable, first-pass accuracy for RF and microwave designs, resulting in shorter physical design cycles and faster time to market. The latest version of Genesys boasts realistic statistical component variations, histograms and yield optimization at a price that is comparable with consumer-oriented computational software. Another key feature of the new release is the integration of the company’s Momentum GX high-performance planar-3D EM simulator into the design suite. The 3D EM simulator is now part of the design flow and delivers the accuracy required for firstpass microwave design success. Momentum GX has the ability to analyze arbitrary design geometries, including multilayer structures, and can also accurately simulate complex EM effects such as coupling and parasitics. It features both full-wave and quasi-static EM solvers. The full-wave EM solver provides accurate simulation of open-boundary problems, can simulate structures with novel, arbitrary shapes, and is capable of full dispersion and radiation simulation. The quasi- R static solver enables significantly faster simulation of much larger, complex circuits without sacrificing accuracy. EM solver on steroids Computer Simulation Technology (CST) recently announced a further acceleration boost for the upcoming 2008 version of its leading Time Domain solver within CST Microwave Studio® (CST MWS) through Acceleware’s new ClusterInABox™ D30. RF design engineers involved in the electromagnetic design and optimization of complex or electrically larger passive components, as well as those interested in signal integrity or electromagnetic compatibility effects, can now take advantage of the performance gained by the combination of the simulation accuracy of the company’s proprietary Perfect Boundary Approximation (PBA)® and Acceleware’s latest ClusterInABox D30. Numerical solutions to Maxwell’s equations vary greatly. The performance of these solvers can be judged best by comparing the time required to reach a predefined level of simulation accuracy. By combining the highly efficient PBA method with the latest in hardware optimisation, the” company’s Time Domain solver can outperform standard FDTD by orders of magnitude. Engineers using the D30 can expect a simulation speed-up of up to a factor 12, in comparison to the already efficient CST MWS implementation on a state-of-theart dual CPU dual core PC. When Time is finally on your side. Tektronix Real-Time Spectrum Analyzers. See frequency and amplitude change over time—witness the perfect solution for transient RF design challenges. Once you see your signal over time, the world of RF troubleshooting becomes incredibly simple. And thanks to frequency domain triggering, real-time seamless capture, and multi-domain views, faults that were practically impossible to replicate can be analyzed with a single capture. It's unlike anything you’ve ever seen. You owe it to yourself to see it. www.tektronix.com/rtsa © 2007 Tektronix, Inc. All rights reserved.
