Today, as witnessed at the EuMW 2008 or European Microwave Week, which just took place in Amsterdam, the wireless industry is facing a plethora of emerging technologies, not least those of OFDM and MIMO. The test and measurement companies in our industry have, or are in the process of addressing the test needs of the MIMO market at this moment. Though we often read about exotic configurations of 8x8 or 4x4, in reality it appears that problems of just 2x2 will be enough to deal with for the moment. To be fair, development is moving at breakneck speed, it is just that market expectations are high and there is a general level of impatience with everyone expecting LTE at the end of 2010. Wireless could very well be at an inflection point, as the potential is enormous, with the promise of pervasive networks such as LTE and WiMAX. However, cost cannot increase and performance and more importantly coverage needs to meet expectations. Failing that, adoption could be slow, as was the case with 3G. With the world economy slowing down, cost is even more pertinent. A slow down in the wireless world would be a shock. So if the wireless industry relies on success of these emerging technologies in the near future, it also holds to a certain extent for the world economy. We need connectivity to address many of the world's problems right now, especially the ability to conserve energy and resources. Without the Internet, would we have taken the last oil shock in our stride for so long? More than ever, we need pervasive networks for everything from Automatic Meter Reading to just being able to have the ability to work at home when necessary. The Internet had a big role in demand destruction of oil recently, and similarly, advanced wireless technologies such as LTE and WiMAX give us both more options and flexibility. The question is can we deliver again, and this time at the right price?
