It seems that the price of energy is on an upward trend for long time driven primarily by rising demand across the globe from developed to emerging markets. Well how does this affect the wireless world? Mobile network operators have noticed and now include in annual reports and on their websites statements on corporate social responsibility, and their plans to reduce the energy costs of running their basestations. Is this a sudden drive to be 'green'? As with all things, the reality is that energy needed to run radio networks is not relatively cheap anymore. In addition, power in under-developed markets is not always available. Consequently it is no longer about passing the cost on or finding alternatives as the only viable alternatives are now wind and solar along with fuel cells — all expensive. Cheap coal plants take a long time to build and are viewed very dimly. The flip side to all of this is efficiency, and hence the drive for more efficient power amplifiers. At least this is a process we can innovate and control. So as I close the year, I look forward to 2008 and am optimistic we will overcome many of the difficulties facing the world of energy. After all wireless can give us the freedom to travel less as well, or work from home. Further, wireless networks will surely play a huge role in monitoring new dynamic electricity grids.
