CRISIS IN THE ER American emergency rooms have become so overcrowded that eight in 10 ER docs told surveyors that they have “grave concerns” about patient safety. Some 200 physicians say they personally know of patients who have died as a result of practices such as “boarding,” in which sick patients are stowed away in corners or hallways while they await a room. Those are the findings of a recent survey in August and September of 1,500 physicians by the American College of Emergency Physicians. Most troubling, perhaps, is that hospitals don’t seem to be trying to end or reduce boarding, according to 79 percent of the surveyed physicians, even as about the same percentage say overcrowding has gotten worse in the last year alone. “If a patient has been admitted to the hospital, he or she should be cared for in an inpatient hospital unit, not ‘boarded’ in the emergency department,” says Linda Lawrence, president of the physicians’ group. Anesthesiologist SNOW JOB If Republican presidential candidates are looking for a good stump-speech line attacking government-controlled healthcare, the Italians recently provided some fodder: Taxpayer-financed nose jobs for cocaine addicts. Yup, it’s true. Bloomberg News reports that “a growing number of Italian cocaine users are putting themselves on the waiting list” for rhinoplasty, made necessary by the damage done to their noses by years of drug abuse. Because the $14,000 procedure is corrective, rather than cosmetic, it’s covered by the Italian public health system. Of course, the waiting list is about 18 months long. Our advice to Italian coke fiends: Put your name on the waiting list early in your addiction cycle. By the time your habit has put a hole in your septum, they’ll be ready for you.
