Physicians Practice - February 2008 - (Page 15) places with them. Maybe they also have to work hard, make important decisions, and have difficult jobs. Free markets always work. The reason we have such a healthcare mess in this country is that we don’t have free markets. —Kenneth D. Christman, MD Dayton, Ohio I enjoyed reading the article “How Much Is Enough?” Realistically, the market determines salary through supply and demand. If you want a higher income, you need to put yourself in a position to make the big bucks. I know several concierge family practice doctors and internists who are netting $500,000 a year — no prior authorizations, no prescription denials — caring only for the wealthy. The real winners (not mentioned in your article) are the insurance companies and drug companies, whose top officers are making millions and millions a year, and the hospital CEOs and COOs and their numerous underlings who are skimming up to 20 percent of the country’s healthcare costs in “administration.” I have urged my kids to stay out of medicine, at least as a “provider,” and go into the business aspect of it if they are interested. Although it is not true that whoever dies with the most money “wins,” it is very dejecting to see people with a fraction of my education, training time, and work hours pulling down millions a year. —John Bakos, MD, PhD Lincoln, Calif.
