One other problem with ofﬁce instant messaging is that employees are not chained to their desks. I have seen ofﬁces take on a cold winter chill in July when employee A sends an instant message to employee B making a disparaging comment about employee C or doctor D, only to ﬁnd employee B wasn’t at his desk and the message was read by someone else. Also, perhaps the medical garment industry should design lab coats with Velcro pockets. Dr. H, who should remain nameless, is one of those absent-minded, big-hearted docs whose ability to lose cell phones and pagers is legendary. His three most amazing: 1. He managed to drop his pager into a urinal … splash! 2. While rocking in a rocking chair, he succeeded in having his cell phone fall out of his pocket and into a cup of coffee … swish! 3. With remarkable dexterity, he took his pager out of his belt clip, fumbled it, and dropped it perfectly down the two-inch opening between the elevator and the fourth ﬂoor of our ofﬁce building. Its remains were found scattered on the bottom of the elevator shaft, and given the pager’s disﬁgurement, we chose cremation rather than a proper trash can burial.
