Physicians Practice - April 2008 - (Page 21) WALK-INS FOR WAL-MART It’s finally happened: Wal-Mart, sensing a lucrative opportunity to offer a cheaper version of primary care, is about to take a big leap into the “convenience clinic” business. It’s first walk-in clinics, where care is generally offered by a midlevel with minimal (if any) physician oversight, will open this month in Arkansas and Georgia, to be followed by at least 400 more by 2010. RediClinic, a Houston-based chain, will operate some 200 of the clinics, which are expected to be EMR-equipped. The growing prevalence of convenience clinics, and their tendency to open shop with EMRs already installed, will WHAT WOULD JESUS EAT? A growing number of churches and faith-based organizations are asking that question, if not in so many words, according to the Chicago Tribune, which recently claimed that weight-loss programs relying on spirituality for motivation are on the rise. One preacher told his flock, “Jesus was not obese,” the paper reported, and he added, “I believe the heart of God is so sad today regarding our physical shape.” The Tribune offers only anecdotal evidence that faith-based diet programs, including one called Bod4God, are on the rise. But it offers research suggesting a link between some religions and obesity: Purdue University sociologist Kenneth Ferraro found higher rates of obesity among Baptists and fundamentalist Protestants than among other Protestant faiths, Catholics, and non-Christian religions. help push forward health IT adoption, according to some proponents. That’s nice (if true). But we’re still wondering about the ever-dwindling role of primary-care physicians in the lives of patients. To say nothing of the economic impact of these clinics on practices.
