Physicians Practice - October 2008 - (Page 16) LETTERS In today’s world, if it’s possible to predict which toddlers may become sociopaths, surely applicants to medical school could be profiled, seeking to identify those at risk of developing a warped perspective of their responsibilities, those with no ability to relate to patients viscerally (which is the level at which most decision-making occurs), and those lacking emotional intelligence (of whom there are many). Applicants at risk should be counseled as to their suitability for medicine and their likelihood of succeeding in a profession with an overwhelming body of knowledge that’s impossible to fully master (“You’ll never be good enough”) and where the cost of some mistakes is so dear (“You must be perfect”). Just because a bright student can master a huge amount of knowledge does not mean that he or she has any aptitude or calling to practice medicine in a way that promotes his or her own mental health and brings compassionate aid to patients. I believe that a significant number of physician suicides would be prevented by screening out applicants whom the training and practice of medicine may warp and destroy. —R. E.
