AN Ig NOBEL VICTORY Congratulations to all recipients of the 2008 Ig Nobel Awards! Organized since 1991 by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine and cosponsored by the Harvard-Radcliffe Society of Physics Students, the HarvardRadcliffe Science Fiction Association, and the Harvard Computer Society, the Ig Nobel awards honor amusing yet legitimate scientiﬁc research across the globe. This year, three awards went to U.S. researchers, including one in medicine to Dan Ariely et. al. for proving that expensive fake medication is more effective than cheap fake medication. American researchers also showed that Coca-Cola is an effective spermicide, although a competing group in Taiwan demonstrated that it is not; they share the chemistry award. Finally, three researchers out of the University of New Mexico took home the economics award for discovering that exotic dancers earn more in tips during the peaks of their fertility cycles.
