You then declare on the basis of this “stat” that “it’s beyond doubt that ours (America’s healthcare) is the most expensive.” But you are egregiously wrong because the comparison is totally invalid for several reasons: Single payer systems do not include the cost of collection in their operating costs. That is usually about 25 percent. Because of our tort liability system, our health costs are inflated by 10 percent to support defensive medicine. Other countries have a loser pays or no fault system. Our population cohort is very different from the other countries mentioned. And we endure an endemic of illegal drugs imported across long open borders which spawns expensive promiscuity and violence. So your conclusion that the U.S. system is the most expensive is very wrong. You simply once again prove the old axiom that apples and oranges can’t be compared. —Calvin S. Ennis, MD Escatawpa Miss.
