2008 U.S. Psychiatric & Mental Health Congress Conference & Exhibition brochure #4 - (Page 11) 23-0 23-1 Schizophrenia Happiness: New Insights from Social and Neuroscience NP SC 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m. 23-3 Dying for a Drink or Drug: Suicide and Addictions PD HOT! Several studies in different countries have reported a high prevalence of alcohol-use disorders among people who commit suicide. By participating in this activity, the attendees will be able to: 1) Discover the link between alcohol use and suicide; 2) Discuss recent clinical studies on the estimated risk of suicide in the presence of current alcohol misuse or dependence; and 3) Recognize global suicide prevention strategies in terms of intervention by adequately trained staff, availability of multidisciplinary specialist alcohol services and aggressive treatment of comorbid depression. 24-6 Aggression: from Evolutionary Psychology to Neurobiology to Practical Treatment NP PD Is it better conceptualized as a state, a trait, or a culturebound construct? Are there predictable and universal causes of human happiness? To what degree is one's degree of happiness modifiable by any life event or intervention? In this session participants will get an introduction to the science of subjective well being. The session will provide an overview of the history, epidemiology, social psychology and neurobiology of happiness. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Explain the major biological and psychological factors associated with lasting happiness; 2) Identify the genetics, neuroimaging correlates, and typical life trajectories of happiness; 3) List the six life interventions that appear most promising to increase lasting happiness. 24-1 23-2 Alcohol Withdrawal Syndromes: Pathophysiology and Management AP Practice Management Series 1C: Getting Paid: Coding, Contracting, and Negotiating PI Alcohol abuse is the most serious drug abuse problem in the U.S. A substantial percentage of patients presenting for treatment have alcohol related medical/neurological/psychiatric problems, many of which are associated to the presence of withdrawal syndromes. About 10% of hospitalized patients develop delirium tremens, which carries a mortality rate up to 15% when inappropriately treated. Each phase of alcohol withdrawal has its own rhythm which, if not understood, may lead to treatment errors and potentially devastating sequelae. In this lecture we will discuss the pathophysiological changes caused by alcohol dependence leading to tolerance and the development of withdrawal syndrome; review the literature regarding diagnosis and management; review the available tools to monitor alcohol withdrawal progression and treatment effectiveness; and discuss recent studies discussing treatment management and effectiveness of various available agents. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Analyze the pathophysiological processes leading to the development of alcohol withdrawal syndromes; 2) Summarize the kinetics, pharmacology and side effect profile of current treatment choices; 3) Categorize the benefits of using diagnostic tools to guide treatment strategies; 4) Develop a rational approach in the selection of appropriate treatment management strategies. This program will look in-depth at contract terms and issues surrounding managed care contracting. Strategies that may be applied to various practice environments, from the solo to larger group, will be discussed. Successful negotiations can be built on relationships as well as facts, and this session will explore both aspects. Participants can look forward to returning to their practices armed with tools to assist in improving cashflow. Come prepared to ask questions! By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Understand in detail the relationship between coding and reimbursement; 2) Determine whether the practice should negotiate under certain common sets of circumstances; and 3) Pursue sound contract terms and strategies related to managed care contract negotiations. This session will provide participants with an overview of human aggression. Based on the speaker's new chapter in the forthcoming Kaplan/Sadock Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, this talk will summarize what we know about the origin, pathophysiology, and clinical management of aggression as it occurs in multiple disorders—from ADHD to organic brain injury. Sample cases will be used to illustrate optimum management based on state-of-the-art literature review. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Discover the major biological and psychological risk factors for childhood and adult aggression—from toddlers with ADHD to bipolar patients to terrorists; 2) Describe new findings that show how gene/environment interactions escalate the risk for human aggression; 3) Apply a practical, evidence-based algorithm for treating aggression in seven important psychiatric conditions. 24-7 Tales from the Clinic: Recognizing the Humanity Behind the Patient PI 24-2 24-3 Mental Health Reform in Africa and Asia: Case Studies in Local to Global Policy and Practice SC A 'Hands On' Workshop for Diagnosing Fibromyalgia in Your Busy Practice NP The ethics of clinical care revolve around several core principles that advise us to heal and not harm patients while respecting individual autonomy. Is it possible, however, to be ethical but not caring? To answer this question, we must explore the virtues embodied by a caring clinician: honesty, empathy, benevolence, humility and others. In a series of intriguing and moving case studies of older psychiatric patients, the presentation will explore the many lessons that patients can teach clinicians about human virtues. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Review the core principles of medical ethics and the relevance of virtue ethics; 2) Through several case studies, learn about several key clinical virtues: empathy, humility, persistence, courage and optimism; and 3) Explore a clinical perspective in which the humanity of patients is recognized and valued. Customize Your Education with 12 Specialized Tracks Our educational tracks will help you create a schedule that best meets your educational goals. You can devote your time to one track or focus on several topics for a well-rounded perspective. Design your own optimal learning experience and return home with the clinical skills you need most in your practice. Fibromyalgia, while common in all clinical settings, is frequently missed as there is lack of familiarity with the tender point examination recommended by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR). In this true ‘hands on’ workshop, all clinicians attending will receive instruction on how to accurately and successfully conduct a rapid and accurate examination to assist in diagnosing fibromyalgia. This workshop is appropriate for all clinicians – psychiatrists, primary care physicians, nurses, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, etc. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Categorize fibromyalgia as a common condition with a known set of diagnostic criteria; 2) Describe the ACR criteria for fibromyalgia and identify the tender points; 3) Explain how to conduct a tender point examination appropriate in both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric settings. 24-8 Relationship Between Mental Disorders and Pain PD PM Many patients with pain suffer from comorbid mental disorders, most notably mood, anxiety and sleep disorders. For these patients, successful treatment of the pain requires that both it and the mental disorders be addressed. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Determine how to diagnose pain and mental disorders when both problems are present; 2) Discuss commonly occurring pain conditions in which psychological factors may play a significant role; and 3) describe the optimal treatment approaches for patients with pain and mental disorders. 12:30-2:30 p.m. 25-0 Major Depressive Disorder PM RX Lunch Symposium • 1.5 credits Supported by an educational grant from Eli Lilly and Company. 24-4 Club Drugs and Their Psychiatric Manifestations AP AP = Addiction Psychiatry CA = Child and Adolescent Psychiatry CAM = Complementary and Alternative Medicine GP = Geriatric Psychiatry NP = Neuropsychiatry PI = Practice Issues, Ethics and Forensic Psychiatry PD = Psychiatric Disorders PM = Psychosomatic Medicine PT = Psychotherapy RX = Psychopharmacology SC = Social and Community Psychiatry VT = Violence and Trauma This talk explores the ongoing concerns about the increase in the popularity of a socially designated class of drugs known as "club drugs.” By participating in this activity, the attendees will be able to: 1) Discuss the major categorization of club drugs and their pharmacological properties; 2) Identify the clinical and psychiatric manifestations of club drugs; and 3) Recognize available treatment approaches and harm reduction and prevention strategies. 24-5 Psychiatry’s Role in Internet Child Pornography Cases GP This course will focus on the criminal justice definitions of child pornography; how the FBI and Department of Justice looks at and prosecutes these cases, and what is asked of psychiatry in these situations. Also presented will be questions about clinical evaluations of patients with child pornography internet addictions. By participating in this activity, attendees will be able to: 1) Describe the legal/psychiatric interface in child internet pornography cases; 2) Enumerate the risks involved in treating patients engaging in child internet pornography; 3) Review the psychological typology of child internet pornography users. A need for education in achieving and maintaining remission in patients with MDD continues to be necessary to provide critical patient outcomes. Our ongoing needs assessment indicates that physicians are unaware and continue to need education regarding treatment considerations for special populations; neurobiological, psychos
