The content, faculty and course materials presented reflect the dedication and exacting standards of these industry leaders. Presenting the Stephen V. Sobel, MD (Host) Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry, UCSD School of Medicine Dr. Sobel is a nationally recognized psychiatric expert and lecturer on the treatment of depression, anxiety, ADD, eating disorders, psychopharmacology and behavioral medicine. The U.S. Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress honored Dr. Sobel as the Teacher of the Year in 2007. A board-certified psychiatrist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Sobel graduated with honors from Duke University and Vanderbilt University Medical School where he was honored with the Beauchamp Award for outstanding performance and promise in psychiatry. He completed an internship in internal medicine with Georgetown University at the District of Columbia General Hospital, and completed a residency in psychiatry at UCSD. Dr. Sobel maintains a private practice in adult and adolescent psychiatry in San Diego and Carlsbad, Calif., and also serves as consulting psychiatrist for both the NFL San Diego Chargers and the MLB San Diego Padres. He is a clinical instructor in psychiatry at UCSD School of Medicine and serves as supervising psychiatrist for the USCD Student-Run Free Clinic for the Homeless. Dr. Sobel has been appointed a Qualified Medical Examiner by the workers Compensation Appeals Board of California and he is an Expert Medical Reviewer for the Medical Board of California. He has written several articles in such publications as the American Journal of Psychiatry, Primary Psychiatry, Journal Watch, Managed Behavioral Healthcare, Medscape, and Audio-Digest. William Soliman, PhD, MPhil, MA (Host) Senior Vice President, Medical & Scientific Affairs, CME LLC Dr. Soliman is responsible for accreditation, managing content development for all educational offerings, overseeing all clinical services, and serving as a professional liaison between CME LLC and advisory boards, medical directors, and other clinicians and scientists. Dr. Soliman’s academic background is in biochemistry, molecular biophysics, and chemical education, and he holds a bachelor’s degree from New York University, a master’s and doctorate from Columbia University, and a second master’s from St. Peter’s College. His clinical background includes various aspects of cardiovascular disease, in particular, dyslipidemia. Dr. Soliman has held various positions within the pharmaceutical industry, including positions with Abbott Laboratories, Merck, and Biovail Incorporated. Dr. Soliman has served as faculty in the departments of biology and chemistry at Kean University and New Jersey City University, and also as a consultant to various medical and scientific education companies, including Pearson Prentice Hall, Kaplan, and Kaplan K12 Learning Services. Dr. Soliman is an active member of the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the National Lipid Association, the American Society of Microbiology, the Drug Information Association, and the American Chemical Society. ADVISORY COMMITTEE Richard Balon, MD Professor, Director of Master of Science in Psychiatry Program Associate Residency Training Director, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, Wayne State University School of Medicine Tony P. George, MD Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Yale University School of Medicine Director of the Program for Research in Smokers with Mental Illness (PRISM), Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), New Haven Dr. Balon has published in the area of sexual dysfunction associated with medications and human sexuality (including two books), biology of anxiety, psychopharmacology and education. He has participated, as a PI or coinvestigator, in numerous research studies. He has served on the wayne State University Institutional Review Board for the last eleven years. He has been actively involved in various professional organizations, namely the APA, ACP and AMA. Dr. George has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and reviews on the pharmacology of nicotine and stimulants, comorbid psychiatric disorders and substance abuse, nicotinic mechanisms in neuropsychiatric disorders, and psychopharmacological treatments of nicotine and other addictions in patients with psychiatric disorders. He serves on the Editorial Boards of Psychiatric Times and The American Journal on the Addictions. C. Lindsay DeVane, PharmD Liza H. Gold, MD Professor and Vice Chair for Research, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Director, Laboratory of Drug Disposition and Pharmacogenetics, Medical University of South Carolina Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. Dr. DeVane is an active practitioner and researcher with more than 250 publications and 100 abstracts involving many aspects of basic and clinical psychopharmacology. He is a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and is an NIH-funded investigator. His research interests include development of new drugs to treat psychotic and mood disorders, obesity, psychoactive drug disposition and effects in pregnancy, and the role of drug transporters in psychopharmacology. Dr. Gold is a clinical and forensic psychiatrist, Associate Director of the Georgetown Psychiatry Residency Program in Psychiatry and Law, and Course Director for the Georgetown Psychiatry Residency Program’s Gender Issues in Psychiatry course. Dr. Gold is the author of the chapter, Gender and Suicide, which will appear in the forthcoming American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Suicide Assessment and Management, edited by Robert I. Simon, MD, and Robert E. Hales, MD. She is also the author of Sexual Harassment: Psychiatric Assessment in Employment Litigation and coeditor of The American Psychiatric Textbook of Forensic Psychiatry.
