SD West 2009 Preview Guide - (Page Cover2) WELCOME LETTER I ’ve thought a lot about the future as the advisory board and I have been planning SD West this year. Of course, in software development, the future is always with us, sometimes before we recognize it. Two years ago, when we asked Felipe Cabrera and Jeff Barr to speak about Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud at SD West 2007, we suspected that the cloud was something transformative—something more than just grid computing with a new name. Today the cloud is everywhere—and that prescient keynote has become a complete track of in-depth tutorials and conference sessions covering what’s becoming vital technology. That 2007 keynote wasn’t the first time SD West has been ahead of the trends—and it won’t be the last. This year’s conference program is broad and deep, once again providing software development professionals with no-nonsense, platform-independent training, while bringing you the future by covering new or newly important technologies like cloud computing, concurrent programming, dynamic languages, functional programming and the growing importance of mobile development. So what do you have to look forward to during SD West 2009? New Tracks In addition to Cloud Computing, three other tracks are making their first appearance in the conference program: New Horizons, covering such emerging and important topics as iPhone development, functional programming and more, Pervasive Parallelism, focusing on parallel computing, and Agile Process, People & Methods, offering courses from many of the leading thinkers in the agile community. Essential Training The most important part of any conference isn’t the bleeding-edge content, but the training that you can put into use the moment you return to the office. With that in mind, we’ve also significantly updated our core tracks to reflect the changing technology and business landscape, such as elevating REST in Web Services, REST & SOA and broadening the Web 2.0 and Beyond. SD West’s language tracks continue to be strong, offering a full complement of updated and new courses in Java, C++ and .NET. Stellar Speakers “Our speakers would rock reading the phonebook,” or so Juval Löwy, .NET Track chair told me last week—and he’s right. This year we have 100+ of the best speakers in the business, folks who are not only the inventors of many the technologies taught, but also implementers. This year you’ll have the opportunity to take courses from Scott Ambler, Robert Martin, Michele Leroux Bustamante, Joshua Kerievsky, Scott Meyers, Dan Saks, Johanna Rothman, Terry Quatrani, Ted Neward, Kevlin Henney and many more. And, there’s more! In addition to 180+ practical and visionary conference sessions, there are daily keynotes, the 19th Annual Dr. Dobb’s Jolt Awards Gala and reception, the Conference Attendee Party, opening Expo Floor reception, Birds-of-a-Feather Gatherings, free sponsored technical sessions and more. Finally, I encourage you to read the preview guide, but more importantly, check out www.SDExpo.com for complete updates as the program develops. I hope to see you in Santa Clara!
