QUIRK T he first commercial organic light-emitting diode TV, the XEL-1, was released by Sony last December. Using OLED technology, Sony is able to produce a TV that has some amazing technical specifications in an extremely small form factor. This is a great piece of technology and really shows what the world can expect in coming years. At this time, the screen size is only 11 inches on the diagonal—tiny for most people’s needs— but Sony demonstrated a 27-inch version at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. It has a 16:9 aspect Spansion 1 million:1. To put that into perspective, most TVs on the market have ratios somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000:1. So we are looking at about a 100x improvement.
