EE Times Under The Hood - October 8, 2007 - (Page 48) under the hood: DIGITAL HOME www.eetimes.com • www.techonline.com Automated blood test is a Breeze BY DAVID CAREY ersonal blood glucose monitors have evolved to become affordable and highly portable electronic devices. The BGMs in use today are little electrochemistry labs. BGMs all rely on the same basic techniques for measurement: A small sample of blood from a skin prick is col- P lected and processed for a chemical reaction by way of a test strip or sample collector, which interfaces to system electronics for electrochemical analysis. The Ascensia Breeze is a BGM that brings a level of convenience to monitoring by use of a disk containing the chemistry needed for glucose measurement. Unlike traditional meters that require individual test strips, the Breeze comprises an inserted cartridge disk system that holds 10 sample strips. Whereas traditional meters require the user to manually enter 48 Electronic Engineering Times, TechOnline | October 8, 2007 http://www.eetimes.com http://www.techonline.com
