Urbanity - Summer 2008 - (Page 11) afternoon tea in the massively palatial lobby, way too popular. The Peninsula lobby is open to non-guests, and an obvious favorite among visitors as well as Hong Kong residents. The spa is also very popular, though not walk-in, and it is amazing. The hotel was built in 1928, dubbed by the architects as the ‘finest hotel east of the Suez’ and it must be said, she’s aged very well. The tower is newer, built in 1995 I think, yet, well in total it seems it’s the essence of charm in its origins that abides. The ‘Pen’ is world class, and aside from the fact that our stay coincided with its 80th anniversary celebrations, which I’m decided increased the head count all around and made a busy hotel even busier, we came away with only positive impressions. The only thing even close to a discordant note was the busy-ness, until you leave the lobby area, then it’s wonderfully sedate. All and all we very much liked this hotel. We were so impressed with the spa we’ve written about it in the ‘Care and Feeding of the Body Beautiful’ section.
