Urbanity - Summer 2008 - (Page 21) 21 I would venture to say with some confidence that for newer, fresher audiences ‘Gypsy’ will be a grand experience. For those who’ve seen Bernadette, Tyne, Linda, and Angela reprise the role that for all time belongs to ethel merman; you may want to haul yourself down to the St. James theatre on 44th for Patti’s virtuoso performance. Patti LuPone adds a lot of class to the sass and brass. So much so, that her performance almost eclipses the rest of the cast. June, played by the fair Leigh Ann Larkin, is a bit of a facsimile. Her anger comes off as contrived which limits her. The strippers are at once foil, humor and detritus; background noise as the drama between rose and Herbie, rose and Louise, and rose and June spills onto the stage. A complex and well drawn representation of imperfect humanity. We recommend you don’t discount ‘Gypsy’ as we almost did, as having been done to death. ‘Gypsy’ has been excellently resurrected. As we go to press the estimable ms. LuPone has just picked up a Tony for her role as rose. Bravo. Contact your Lifestyle Concierge at 800.940.3612 for ticket information. urbanity Summer 2008
