Destinations/Travel I 8 The ‘Pen’ f you’re going to Hong Kong for business or pleasure, and plan to stay at a hotel, we enthusiastically recommend the Peninsula. The rooms are large, airy and beautiful. The tower suites have wonderful views of the harbor, and from linens to technology, they’ve thought of everything, and I mean everything. The ‘Pen’, as it’s called by seasoned guests, is proud of its five star status, and seemingly determined to retain it. You can arrange to be scooped up by a Rolls Royce (from a fleet of a dozen or so), or a helicopter; there are two pads on the roof. From arrival to departure the Peninsula staff is taking care of you in truly excellent fashion. At night they steal your shoes away and clean them. I won’t go on about the amenities, but when you arrive, have a chat with the concierge and be amazed. The restaurants are a delight, but the Peninsula is seriously circumspect. We didn’t dress for dinner exactly, so…well, no cargo pants or sleeveless shirts—of course they’re very charming when they send you away. Great food in every restaurant, though I wasn’t totally sold on Chesa, that’s less about the food than personal preference. My favorite was the Felix on the top floor. The pumpkin soup followed by Tasmanian salmon and parsnip gratin will make your taste buds stand up and yodel. Internationally famous French designer Phillipe Stark designed the Felix, and after seeing the Felix—we forgave him for mass producing his designs. The Sunday tea dance was…elegant; there’s an old world/romantic, quite pervasive and decisively oriental ambiance here which is oddly, but completely compatible with one of the finest, most modern hotels in the world.
