Conformity Magazine - January 2009 - (Page 46) NewsBreaks Looking Back: Items from Past Issues of Conformity Here is a look back at some of the topics we’ve covered in the NewsBreaks section of Conformity during the past decade: One year ago Is Apple’s iPhone Toxic? “Greenpeace says that Apple’s iPhone contains toxic chemicals that could eventually pose a hazard to consumers. According to ABC News, the claim is based on testing conducted at Greenpeace Research Laboratories at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. There, scientists reportedly dismantled a sample iPhone and tested 18 separate components, finding brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Greenpeace claims that the harmful chemicals contained in the iPhone could be released when the product is recycled.” Conformity, January 2008 Five years ago ARRL Appeals FCC Orders on HighPowered Transmitters “The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) has reportedly filed a Petition for Review in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in connection with the Commission’s decision to allow the unlicensed operation of fixed point-to-point transmitters in the 24.05-24.25 GHz band at field strengths up to 2500 mV/ m. The ARRL believes that such highpowered transmitters present substantial interference potential, and should be licensed.” Conformity, January 2004 Ten years ago EU/U.S. Banana Dispute May Threaten Some Electronic Imports “The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) is considering the imposition of “prohibitive” duties on selected products imported from the EU if the EU fails to accept a banana trading scheme that gives U.S. and Latin American banana interests greater access to the EU market. If implemented, imported duties could double on a variety of commercial and consumer electrical products, including electrical storage batteries, electrical lighting or signaling equipment, lamps and lighting fittings, and “electrothermic hairdressing apparatus” (i.e., hair dryers and hair curlers).” Conformity, January 1999 Web Directory Advertisers AR . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7 Braden Shielding Systems . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 23 Com-Power Corporation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
