you must ensure that you comply with any eco-design requirements in any EuP implementing measures that apply to them. So what are these requirements likely to be? According to the essential requirements of the EuP Directive, requirements in implementing measures must improve the environmental performance of the products covered, and may be specific (e.g., specifying maximum standby losses) or generic (e.g., improving recyclability), and must be addressed across the whole product life cycle. The directive also allows that manufacturers be required to carry out ecological profiling of their products, that is, determining the product design aspects that give rise to the most significant environmental impacts across the whole product life cycle. Fortunately, this only needs to be done if required by the implementing measure covering the product, and so far none of the forthcoming measures include this requirement. So the profiling of life cycle impacts has been carried out for the product group during the preliminary studies. The requirements reflected in the early draft measures focus almost entirely on specific measures for energy reduction in the use phase, as the preparatory studies have already identified this as the most significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. For some products, aspects relating to materials and hazardous chemicals are also under consideration. Later measures and later revisions are likely to include requirements addressing other phases of the product’s life cycle (e.g., energy in manufacturing and end of life), in addition to other product aspects that adversely impact the environment, such as hazardous substances, material resource efficiency and recycling. For the moment, however, the emphasis is on reducing energy in use to achieve rapid and significant gains. Energy-reducing requirements appearing in draft measures include reducing standby and off mode losses, reducing no load losses, increasing efficiency of external power supplies, increasing the efficacy (lumens/watt) and performance of lamps, and reducing “on” mode energy consumption in SSTBs and monitors. Design approaches identified emphasize the employment of power management, including auto transitioning, adaptive clock frequency, use of autarkic secondary power supplies for standby mode, and the use of very low power (or no power) display technologies. Consideration is also being given to eliminate mercury in back- lit LCD screens, to use new PCB technology utilizing high temperature thermoplastics, and to optimise the use of non-coated plastics for enclosures to improve thermal and material energy recovery. Of course, these are only recommendations at this stage and, as such, they may change or disappear. But they indicate some of the likely areas that will be addressed. Need a Bright Idea?
