Electric Toasters: QVC, Inc. of West Chester, PA has announced the recall of about 13,000 Cook’s Essential brand electric toasters manufactured in China. According to the company, the toaster can turn on without bread in the slots and ignite items placed on top of it, posing a fire hazard. QVC has received reports of five toasters turning on spontaneously, including two incidents of toaster covers burning and one incident of fire damage, but no reports of injuries. The recalled toasters were sold through QVC’s televised shopping programs, web page, toll-free number, outlet, and employee and Studio stores from May 2000 through May 2003 for between $50 and $60. Toasters: Applica Consumer Products, Inc. of Miramar, FL has recalled about 70,000 Black & Decker brand Infrawave toasters manufactured in China. The company says that an electrical component in the toaster can overheat and ignite the circuit board, posing a fire hazard. Applica has received two reports of the toasters igniting, including one report of a fire that damaged a kitchen cabinet and countertop, but no reports of injuries. The recalled toasters were sold at home improvement and discount department retailers nationwide from March 2007 through November 2007 for about $50. Air-Powered Hockey Tables: Finally, Gamenamics, Inc. of Elgin, IL is recalling about 1100 of its cordless air-powered hockey tables with rechargeable battery manufactured in China. Gamenamics says that the hockey table’s wires can overheat or melt, posing a burn hazard to consumers. The company has received 11 reports of burnt or melted wires, but no reports of injuries or property damage. The hockey tables were sold through Hammacher Schlemmer and Sky Mall catalogs and web sites from August 2006 through January 2007, and from June 2007 through July 2007, for about $400.
