Templates A through to D cover GR-1089-CORE, E through to G cover UL 60950-1, and templates H and I cover UL 1459. Power Fault Testing A series of specified AC levels and durations are applied to components, and the testing must show that hazards were not created, and operate time-current values did not exceed the maximum levels in the appropriate template. Figure 3 shows the basic power fault test setup. There are four circuit blocks; from left to right these are the AC source, any optional primary protector, the component voltage and current recorder, and the mounted component. The parts and functions of these blocks are: • AC source: There are three components to the AC source: an adjustable AC voltage source, Vs, a timed switch, SW, for applying the AC, and a current limiting resistor, Rs. The adjustable voltage source should have a voltage range of 120 V AC to 600 V AC, and a current supply capability range of 60 A for 5 s to 25 A for 1800 s (at 120 V). The timed switch, SW, does more than just control the AC application time. For the 40 A and 60 A levels, the switch must close at the following voltage phase angle; 5°, 45°, 90° and 135°. At high-currents, the performance capability of a thermally operated protector can be dependent on the instantaneous source voltage when the protector operates and the current is reduced. One cannot directly control the instant the protector operates. Varying the start phase angle indirectly varies the time at which the protector operates and the instantaneous source voltage. The short-circuit current limiting resistor, Rs, is the quotient of the specified open-circuit voltage, Vs, and the specified short-circuit current, IS, less the source resistance of the voltage source.
