Conformity Magazine - March 2009 - (Page 33) protection relays. The introduction of IEC 61000-4-18 Ed1, as a basic standard, takes into account the use of SF6 insulation by adding higher frequencies the “fast waves” at 3 MHz, 10 MHz and 30 MHz. These are applied at much higher voltages, up to 4 kV, than the existing 100 kHz and 1 MHz which have been renamed as the “slow waves”. Product family standards are slowly incorporating the “fast” waves where appropriate. In any case, they should be taken into account when testing new measurement and protection relays that could be operating with either air or gas insulated switchgear. Apart from the damped oscillatory waves, other test types are required as specified in the product Product Standard IEC 60255-5 Phenomena 1.2/50us voltage impulse standards. Figure 3 indicates the test requirements for protection relays. The application is very much product dependant. IEC 61000-4-18 was born out of the IEC 61000-4-12 Edition 1 which described both damped oscillatory and 100 kHz Ring wave phenomena. Because the two applications are completely different, a decision was taken to separate the impulse forms into two standards relevant to the specific applications. This approach mirrors the ANSI standards where the 100 kHz ring wave is described in ANSI C62.41, together with the combination wave, and the damped oscillatory wave is specified in ANSI C37.90 together with the Electric Fast Transient (EFT) impulse.
