Conformity Magazine - March 2009 - (Page 41) Product Reviews can be wiped or washed off the surface, while IDPs are permanent, guaranteeing storage stability of packages. (Topical antistats are simply sprayed or coated onto the surface of the finished article. Because they too are easily wiped or rubbed off, these agents are at best transient.) Other advantages of IDPs, particularly compared to carbon black, include low particulation and an ability to be colored. Color coding in the plant can improve production efficiency and enable faster reaction times in the process chain. Costs can be lowered by reducing failures due to choosing incorrect parts, and also by improving process flow to and from storage facilities. Conclusion There isn’t one universal solution. Often multiple solutions are used in combination, depending upon the package and what the item will be protected against: direct ESD, electrostatic fields, triboelectric charge generation, or a combination of all three. However, IDPs offer several distinct advantages, all of which lead to cost savings, an important consideration in today’s economic environment: • Since they are permanent, IDPs last throughout the lifetime of the article in use and, in many cases, even after washing and wiping—saving the cost of replacing ESD packaging over the long term. • They work independently of humidity, so companies can standardize their ESD packaging—saving on purchasing resources, increasing discounts on volume purchases, and reducing the number of suppliers. • They allow for color coding of the plastic packaging—lowering costs by reducing errors in choosing parts.
