Conformity Magazine- May 2008 - (Page 6) Editor’s Note See You In Detroit! For engineering professionals involved in the field of regulatory compliance, staying abreast of technology and regulatory developments is as great a challenge as ever. That’s why I want to encourage you to attend this year’s IEEE EMC Symposium, slated for August 18-22, at the Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan. Led by Symposium Chair Kimball Williams, a group of committed volunteers have worked over the past year and a half to ensure that this year’s technical program is relevant to the needs of both experienced engineers as well as those who are new to the field. The result? Thousands of anticipated attendees and over 100 exhibitors as of this writing (including Conformity!) will make this an all-important event for compliance professionals. This year, technical program co-chairs Mark Steffka of General Motors and Tom Jerse of The Citadel have worked with their committee to select more than 180 technical papers on a wide range of subjects. Presentation of those papers at this year’s Symposium will be organized into one of seven different technical tracks, including: 1) Automotive EMC; 2) EMC in Aerospace; 3) EM Modeling Techniques; 4) Printed Circuit Board Design and Modeling; 5) Signal Integrity; 6) System EMC Test and Measurement; and 7) System EMC Design and Modeling. The tracking arrangement of technical paper presentations should make it easier for attendees to pursue a particular area of interest. In addition to the technical paper presentations, there will be 21 separate workshops and tutorial sessions, organized by the Workshop and Tutorial Committee co-chaired by Candace Suriano of Suriano Solutions, John Maas of IBM, and Thomas Holmes of Agilent Technologies. Symposium workshops provide attendees with an opportunity to interact directly with subject matter experts and practitioners on real world teachings and applications. Also returning this year are the ever-popular “Demonstrations and Experiments” sessions, which offer practical experience in a dynamic, hands-on environment. First introduced at the 2007 Symposium, the highly successful Global EMC University program is back again in 2008. Taught by EMC experts, the Global EMC University program is a multi-session curriculum covering the Conformity mAy 2008 © Ivan Cholakov | Dreamstime.com fundamentals of the field. Finally, the iNARTE Certification Exam will be administered on Friday of Symposium week for those attendees wishing to become iNARTE-certified as either an EMC Engineer or an EMC Technician. Registrations made on or before July 14th receive a $100 discount from the regular Symposium registration fee of $600. Registration for the Global EMC University program is an additional $275 for early registrants (and a bargain at twice the price!). Professional development activities almost always take a back seat to the day-to-day responsibilities of our jobs. But our value as compliance professionals is based in no small part on our efforts to stay current with the ever-changing landscape that represents today’s regulatory compliance field. Your attendance at this year’s EMC Symposium will help you to achieve that goal. We look forward to seeing you in Detroit! Bill von Achen Managing Editor
