Conformity Magazine - August 2008 - (Page 33) nsuring automotive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is dominated by experimental activities. However, the advent of electric and hybrid vehicles, and the increasing wide range of systems and frequencies which are used in vehicles, are expected to make automotive EMC an increasingly troublesome burden to vehicle manufactures. The adoption of numerical modeling techniques will soon provide the most cost effective approach for future automotive EMC engineering. For these reasons, design engineers and researchers have in recent years been intensively studying the design and the performance of automotive antennas and cable harnesses. One of the most challenging tasks is the development of models that allow a quick and reliable design process, speeding up the time to market, and reducing expensive testing times. E The present article investigates two typical problems of radiated electromagnetic disturbances: 1) a performance study of a conformal hidden antenna (whose purpose is to take control and protect a vehicle from being stolen); and 2) a crosstalk analysis, relating signal integrity (SI) issues and EMI emissions of a cable harness inside a vehicle. Antenna Performance and Nearfield/Farfield Radiation Modeling vehicle-based antennas necessitates modeling the whole car body as this forms part of the antenna system. Hidden antennas excite not only currents on the body shell, but also fields within the body cavity. Modeling such vehicle antenna systems is not a mature art, and much needs to be done to understand how much of the complex vehicle body detail needs to be included, and the effects of furnishings and passenger load on performance. The problem when dealing with such models is the high aspect In addition the demand on computer memory, even at low ratio (comparing the size of the vehicle and the dimensions of frequencies, remains a problem if some or all of the above the antenna and/or the cable harness/bundles) and, therefore, have to be included in the model. the high computational resources needed in order to perform numerical simulations. Several papers have reported on For this reason, numerical simulations are necessary to check vehicle simulations [1-5], but there is still a considerable whether the location is reasonable, and that the near field (for way to go in order to be confident on the prediction of the instance electric field and surface current distribution) as well simulated results, especially when test measurements are not as farfield values are acceptable. available. 1231_OAK_trd ad_Mil_MECH_1/2pg:1231_OAK_brand ad_1/2pg 12/6/07 10:14 AM Page 1 BE A HERO.
