EPA Releases Report on U.S. Electronic Waste The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a draft report that gives a detailed (and some might say dismal) picture of the current and future state of electronic waste in the United States. The report, “Management of Electronic Waste in the United States,” provides an updated analysis of how many electronic products, including televisions, personal computers and peripherals, and cell phones are being recycled or reused, as well as how much is still winding up in landfills. In summary, although efforts to recycle electronic products have continued to increase, the percentage of products that are recycled remains stuck at between 15-20% because the number of electronic products that are available for recycling has continue to grow. Even when electronic products that are placed in storage or reused are removed from the totals, the EPA estimates that at least 44% of electronic products are still simply disposed of, mostly in landfills. Our readers can view the complete text of the EPA’s report on electronics waste at www.conformity.com/0916. Medical Device Manufacturer Enters Consent Order A New Jersey-based company has agreed to stop distributing medical devices that it manufactures until its production processes meet the requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Shelhigh Inc. of Union, New Jersey has entered into a consent order, which forbids the company from distributing a variety of implantable medical devices, from pediatric heart valves to surgical patches and arterial grafts, until its manufacturing methods, facilities and controls comply with the FDA’s current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) and quality systems regulations and medical device reporting requirements. As we’ve previously reported (see Conformity, June 2007), the FDA seized in April all implantable medical devices from Shelhigh after identifying significant deficiencies in the company’s manufacturing process, including a poorly constructed and maintained clean room, inadequate monitoring of critical manufacturing environments for possible contamination, and failure to test products for sterility and contaminants. Our readers can view the complete text of the FDA’s press release regarding the consent order with Shelhigh at www.conformity.com/0918. A “Q&A” prepared by the FDA on Shelhigh medical devices can be viewed at www.conformity.com/0919. Tate Renominated to the FCC President George W. Bush has nominated Deborah Taylor Tate to a second term on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Adelstein, confirmed in late 2004 to a second term on the Commission. Adelstein’s term expires June 30, 2008. • Robert M.
