Conformity Magazine - September 2008 - (Page 15) Since then, the Association has published 30 standards documents and 19 technical reports covering ESD in the electronics environment. In 1991, the ESD Association became an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited standards development organization. Accreditation by ANSI signifies that the procedures used by the standards body in connection with the development of American National Standards meet the Institute’s essential requirements for openness, balance, consensus and due process. (See Introduction to ANSI, www.ansi.org) In 1999, the ESD Association published ANSI/ESD S20.20 ESD Association Standard for the Development of an Electrostatic Discharge Control Program for the Protection of Electrical and Electronic Parts, Assemblies and Equipment (Excluding Electrically Initiated Explosive Devices). This standard was developed by the ESD Association in response to a request from the United States Department of Defense to prepare an ESD process standard to replace MIL-STD 1686. ANSI/ESD S20.20 has since become the model for ESD programs throughout the world, with Spanish and Chinese translations published and available for download on the Association web site. The Standard was updated and rereleased in 2007 as ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007. In 1993, the ESDA issued ANSI/ESD STM 11.11, (for surface resistance measurements) for use in place of ASTM D257 for dissipative materials. In 2003, the ESDA released ANSI/ESD S541, ESD Association Standard for the Protection of Electrostatic Discharge Susceptible Items—Packaging Materials for ESD Sensitive Items, which defines the packaging properties needed to protect ESD sensitive devices through all phases of production, transport and storage. Device classification standards are an area of expertise for the ESD Association. Committee members representing component suppliers, test equipment manufacturers, technical consultants and end users meet regularly to discuss test parameters for determining device sensitivities for the different failure models, including but not limited to: Human Body Model (HBM), Charged Device Model (CDM), Machine Model (MM), and Transmission Line Pulse (TLP). Recently, the ESD Association has begun meeting with other device standards writing organizations to work toward common test methods. Currently, the industry must select one of a few test methods for a single failure model, or they must use multiple test methods, which add time and expense. The harmonization of the device testing standards would simplify the testing required by industry. The ESD Association is continuing to work on new standards and the review of existing standards as the electronics industry is becoming more demanding of effective ESD testing and controls. There are currently 27 Working Groups involved in the creation and review of standards. ESD Roadmap In 2005, the ESD Association published the ESD Technology Roadmap, a paper that identifies the industry trends of ESD susceptibility in electronic devices. The Roadmap is a joint effort between major component manufacturers. The Roadmap indicates that, as devices become smaller, with more function and higher process speeds, they will be more susceptible to ESD damage. In addition to the Roadmap, the ESD Association has published white papers detailing industry trends. Additional white papers are in the planning stages. Education The ESD Association places a high priority on education in the field of ESD control, with the goal of providing professionals with the knowledge and tools that they need to meet the challenges of ESD in their industry. The ESD Association is holding its 30th EOS/ESD Symposium this September in Tucson, Arizona. The Symposium is the international technical forum on electrical overstress and electrostatic discharge that features research, technology, and solutions to increase understanding, enhance quality and reliability, reduce and control costs, and improve yields and productivity.
