Health officials in Moscow confirmed at least 12 separate cases of laser-related blindness at the Central Opthamological Clinic there. Another 17 cases were reported at Moscow’s City Hospital. The cases of blindness were recorded in the days following the Aquamarine Open Air Festival in Kirzhach, Russia on July 5. An ophthalmologist involved in treating some of the injured reported individual loss of vision as high as 80%, with all victims evidencing retina scarring consistent with laser burns. According to Festival attendees, rain during the day of the event forced organizers to erect tents for an all-night dance party, and that the powerful laser lights that would have normally been used to illuminate the sky were used inside the tents, partially refracting into the eyes of the dancers.
