NewsBreaks continued from page 23 EU Scientific Committee Releases Updated Data on EMF Risks A scientific committee of the Commission of the European Union has released an updated report on the possible health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields and is calling for further research. Drawn from a review of scientific articles published in English language peer-reviewed scientific journals, the report from the EU Commission’s Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) includes the following principle findings: • Regarding exposure to radio frequency fields (RF fields), no health effect has been consistently demonstrated at exposure levels below the limits established in 1998 by the International Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. However, this evaluation is based on limited data, especially for long-term low-level exposure; • Regarding intermediate frequency fields (IF fields), experimental and epidemiological data from the IF range is sparse; therefore, assessment of acute health risks is based on known hazards at lower and higher frequencies. However, evaluation of possible effects from long-term exposure is becoming increasingly important due to new and emerging technologies; • Regarding extremely low frequency fields (ELF fields), prior conclusions that ELF magnetic fields are possibly carcinogenic is still valid. However, recent research has indicated that an association is unlikely in cases of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. Updated Standards List For The EU’s EMC Directive The Commission of the European Union (EU) has published an updated list of standards that can be used to demonstrate conformity with the essential requirements of the EMC Directive (89/336/EEC). The list of CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI standards was published in the July 20 issue of the Official Journal of the European Union and replaces all previously published standards lists for the directive. Call for Presentations for 2008 International ESD Workshop Announced The ESD Association has announced that it is now accepting proposals for presentations at the 2008 International Electrostatic Discharge Workshop, to be held on May 12-15 in Port D-Albret, France. According to the ESDA, presentations for the workshop can address any one of a number of possible topics, including component level ESD testing, ESD characterization, system-level ESD issues, immunity of ICs to ESD, and unresolved ESD issues. Proposals for oral presentations should be two pages (including figures) and must clearly present the data and the significance of the results. Abstracts should be e-mailed in PDF format to iew@esda.org by not later than November 26, 2007. Accepted proposals will be announced on or before January 7, 2008.
